tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=243748&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhlIt should be officially announced early on this week. According to other reports, the deal averages out to a $4.25 cap hit, which I'm very happy with. We're talking about a guy who put up 46 points in only 56 games last season due to injury (prorated, that comes to 67 points over a whole season). Holmgren continues to make moves that just astound me. Lupul was a great acquisition, and if he plays like he did last year, but remains healthy all year, we would've had to pay a ton to get him locked up after this season. He's a great forward with the perfect goal scoring touch we need. On a team where Gagne will be your #1 sniper, its good to have another one to utilize as well. Throw Carter into that mix if he continues to play the way he did towards the end of the year, and we're set. I loved Lupul since we brought him in. I was ecstatic when I heard we dealt the booger eater for him and Smith. Smith was a stop gap type guy, and I liked him, but Lupul to me was the centerpiece of this deal (even if he wasn't intended to be). Its great to have him locked up. Not only because of his talent, but this is the first team in a long time where we had young players who all seem to actually enjoy hanging out with each other and genuinely care about each other. That goes a long way towards a winning team and is an underrated aspect of the word "team".

Anytime you can lock down a solid, semi-proven young talent for a few years, it's always a good thing. It ensures some consistency (at least in a body on the ice) and allows for some flexibility with other trade options.
