Two in particular with this update:
Men's Basketball - yeah, those guys. Believe it or not, they don't completely suck this season. After opening the season with convincing wins over the normal crew of cupcakes, we found ourselves in Philly for some tournament or something. With the chance to give ourselves an early season test against Villanova, we blew our chances by losing a close one to Rhode Island, 72-77. However, we didn't crumble like we have in past years, and easily won our consolation game over Towson.
Then tonight we found ourselves on the road again, this time against Georgia Tech as part of the ACC/Big Ten challenge that the Big Ten loses every year. And even though it was a tough final minute, we still found a way to hold on to beat GTech, 85-83. We actually look halfway decent this year, and a lot of that is thanks to sophomore guard Taylor Battle. The kid is doing it all, and basically playing every minute thanks to an inexperienced bench. Hopefully Chris Babb can start to pick up his play and help give Battle some rest. But with (senior forward) Cornley and (senior guard) Pringle doing solid work, there's a lot in place to possibly push this team into the tourney. Time will tell...
Women's Volleyball: Still one of my favorite sports on campus - helps that I'm a booster member too - and now one of the greatest teams in the history of NCAA women's volleyball. These girls now hold the record for most consecutive matches won (58, I think...) and they became the first team in NCAA women's volleyball history to win every single set they played - going a perfect 96-0 on their way to the top seed in the tournament. First game is Friday in Rec Hall against Long Beach State. Now begins the run to defend their title. I'm hoping to be around next weekend for the regional finals.
Always nice to see that Penn State continues to be a force in so many of the varsity sports.
