I saw that earlier today. I was surprised to read that.

I completely agree with the article. I won't discuss Hamels, since he's now signed, but consider Howard: he's a first baseman who hits for low average and strikes out a lot. His offensive numbers for RBI and HR are obviously at the leading edge of first basemen, but the difference between him and other possible replacement first basemen isn't that huge. Plus, other first basemen can actually play defense.
Now consider Madson, who plays one of the manager's most coveted positions in baseball: relief pitcher. He had 76 appearances last year, so he's a workhorse. He wound up with a very solid 3.05 ERA. Considering that the Phillies took a hit in their bullpen when Romero got suspended, his presence there is very important.
That being said, Madson turned down $4 million a year, which is a pretty strong statement. I don't think he'll fare much (if any) better than that in arbitration.

And the number becomes 5 (for arbitration): www.philly.com/philly/blogs/phillies_zone/Phillies_Madson_reach_3-year_extension_deal_.htmlSo, apparently they weren't as headstrong against the offer as they first appeared. Or perhaps the incentives are really good. Like "free booze and women" good. And this is a nice surprise - turning down the offer originally and relating him to at-their-time top-tier closers, it was the first signs of the end of Madson in Philly. As it is, everyone's happy. For at least three more years, until we do this dance again...
